Trip to Santa Cruz

Maxine looks out over the Pacific Ocean as we drive down the coast to Santa Cruz for an antique motorcycle show. The drive was beautiful!

Maxine crashes out in our hotel as soon as we get to Santa Cruz! We had a great view of the forest and took a long walk along the grounds through their trails. It was amazing.

Maxine has Surgery

Maxine had to have surgery this week on her leg! She somehow scraped her paw, probably at daycare, right where there was no muscle just bone and tendon. She couldn't leave it alone so she ended up making it worse. 

She is now on pain meds, antibiotics and has this little cast with the sunshine on it. Very cute!

They also found a heart irregularity which we will have to follow-up with once she heals from her paw. They say this is common in older athletic breeds.

Max has been on bed rest and will continue to be for another week at least. We were going to take her to Santa Cruz with us this weekend but she really can't go. 

She goes to the doctor today to get the bandage changed and perhaps get the sutures out. 

Meanwhile, she can't figure out why we won't let her run!

Jimmy found these two pieces of driftwood on one of our daily walks on the bay trail. They are new scratching posts for the cats! He put some treats on the little shelf to entice them up. Lulu was the first to figure it out! Driven by the prospect of snacks, Simone was close to follow.

Without claws, Felix waited until later to figure out how he could get up the logs. Turns out he can pretty much just jump up to the shelf using the logs as a stepping stone. Too bad all the treats were gone!

Maxine's Memorial Day

Last weekend it was a beautiful long weekend with picture perfect weather. We decided to take the '52 for a long drive on the coast. Maxine started out skeptical, she is still not a big fan of riding in the back of the '52, but ended up having a great day.

This first picture is in Half Moon Bay near the dog-friendly restaurant Jimmy found for us. You can see the '52 in the back ground and behind her is an old building which is the town feed store.

Next we spent some time tripping around Half Moon Bay, admiring this unique little town.

We stumbled upon the famous mural of the surfer on one of the monster waves called Mavericks, which Half Moon Bay is famous for.

We then traveled on down Highway 1 which takes you up and down the coast. We traveled South to a beach called Bean Hallow. It was an amazing drive with the Pacific Coast stretched out before us.

We realized that Maxine has never seen the Pacific coast! I was excited to share this with her since it is one of my favorite joys in life.

Finally we landed in Pescadero, CA. A small sleepy town just about a mile inland from the ocean. We found this great little picnic spot where Max could roam around without a leash. We had some snacks and Maxine had a chance to rest and gear up for the drive home.

It was a wonderful day!

Maxine has been having tummy problems. I consulted the person I know with the most nutrition information for canines, "Dr" Leslie. She prescribed a bottomless bowl of chicken, veggies and rice. Mac scarfed two bowls.

Although this made a better picture, sadly it features Max moving her food onto the carpet where she prefers to eat. Whatever it takes! Thanks Doc!

In Loving Memory of Ellie Shilton-Lloyd

Here’s a few quick words about our diva, the queen of our house and our first baby. She had a great nose, and managed to catch her fair share of ground squirrels and gofers, although she always was a little surprised by that and never quite sure what to do with them. Although she was clearly the house alpha, she always wanted to hang out with the biggest un-neutered pit bulls at the park…we joked that she took after my sister in her propensity for liking men who would only be bad for her. Steinway, our boy dog, was the perfect canine pack mate for her, because he never challenged HER right to pick which couch to lie on and the fact that she should always walk on the right. My favorite game to play with her was to get the Audubon stuffed birds (with “real bird calls”) and squeak them from behind my back. Her puzzled, expressive face would scrunch up as she tried to figure out how a bird got in the house, and apparently was calling from my butt.

This picture is from Christmas 2010: hard to believe that she already had a well advanced brain tumor. We had noticed in the past month that she was getting a little more growly than usual, and was not as quick to jump in the car for trips to the park. We took her to the vets about 4 weeks ago, thinking it might be arthritis, and were prescribed zuberin. However, about a week ago she stopped eating as much, and started sleeping more. When we came home Sunday night, she was lying on the floor and wouldn’t get up, even for a walk. When she finally did get up, after much coaxing, it was obvious she was having trouble walking, and almost fell over. So we rushed her to the vet hospital. She stayed with them overnight and the next day, and they couldn’t find anything wrong, although she seemed to be in pain if you touched almost any part of her body. By Tuesday morning she was in obvious pain and crying out, so our vet got us in to UC Davis and we rushed her up there from the vet hospital she had been at. Even in the car ride, she had deteriorated greatly, and an MRI showed that she had a massive tumor in the center of her brain and it had metastasized to her spine - the docs were amazed that she hadn’t shown symptoms of severe impairment before now! The tumor was inoperable, so we asked them not to bring her out of the anesthesia from the MRI, as that would only bring her more pain, and said our good byes.

In loving memory of our companion of 11 years, we love you and will miss you!
