Maxine was born May 5, 2002. She was a part of the Flying Eagles Kennel. She raced under the name Flying Doodle. Here is a link to her statistics and her lineage:
Maxine came to us in August 2005. She broke her leg on the race track and was picked up by Greyhound Pets of America who paid for the surgery she needed to fix her leg and then find a home for her. We were the lucky ones to walk in and find her. The first thing she did when we met her was pee on the dog bed. The woman introducing us said she was very stubborn. That proved to be very true about Maxine!
In Houston Maxine slowly came out of her shell. She went to My Dog and Me for awhile to do play groups and eventually connected with her best friend Marley. Marley and her spent a lot of time over the next few years until our move to California. They had play dates 2 - 3 days per week for years. They played hard and in a way that she never played with any other dog. She even stayed with Marley for three months during the transition. There is no other dog Maxine liked better than Marley. They were truly like two sisters - kindred spirits.
While in Houston Maxine not only became a part of our family but she actually saved our lives. We had a fire start on the fence in our backyard from our neighbors property and she barked to wake us up. We saw a wall of fire in the back yard and quickly dressed and got her, three cats and two rabbits.
Maxine love the beach and loved to run. While living in Texas we took her once a year for a full week to Port Aransas, TX. The first few years she would chase birds. Later, she took a liking to running in the dunes. In California, she and her dog walker and the pack went two times a week to Fort Funston where they walked and played on the beach. She had her own beach here in Foster City. It was a little strip of sand revealed when the tide was really low. We called it Maxine's beach. She loved to go there and run like crazy, get chased by Jimmy and then be done with it.
Maxine volunteered for a number of organizations. While in Texas she volunteered with the Meals on Wheels for dogs, bringing dog and cat food to the elderly and sick so they could keep their companions. In California, she has volunteered with Project Bay Cat doing a weekly route of feeding the feral bay cats that live in the rocks by the bay.
Maxine lived with three cats and at one point in time she also lived with two rabbits. She treated everyone the exact same: she completely ignored them!
Maxine was not your typical dog. She really preferred people over dogs, she didn't like loud sound, she loved chicken from the grill but demanded chicken of some sort in all her meals. Max loved Jimmy. They were truly a good team. She went everywhere with him.
Maxine loved the truck. The black Ford F150 was her truck. Riding in the truck with her head hanging out the window was one of her favorite things to do. Every time our keys would clang around she would perk up to see if a truck ride was in the making.
Maxine was a wonderful, unique dog and will be greatly missed. She will always have a special place carved out in our hearts and in those who knew and loved her.
